ABOUT OUR EXPERIENCE

Our participation in the European Week for Waste Reduction is a unique experience. The students achieved substantial collaborations, exchanged news and information and they improved their environmental knowledge. Furthermore they earned the respect of their peers and became a role model in their field. They had the opportunity to offer enough positive input and to land an impressive position in the local society. Beyond their exceptional cooperation and their purely experiential presentation the students managed to share in the local society their genuine environmental message: “Don't throw your household utensils and tools. ReUz them.. Give them a second chance. See them in a different way!!" All participants performed above and beyond and they all confirmed their commitment to serving the society by building communities for a better future. They managed to inspire community, to contribute to circular economy by utilizing innovative experiential actions seeking to demonstrate innovation and creativity in delivering lasting results. What makes our actions extraordinary is the fact that until now there is no collection point for used household utensils and tools in the city of Athens and we seek to scale our actions by filling the specific gap with the creation of a local reusing center. We try to reuse or recycle as much of the waste we recover as possible, aiming to increase awareness about the importance of environment conservation, reducing the pressure on landfill sites and encouraging a circular economy. In other words, besides thinking globally, we should act locally in order to be able to understand the importance of it and make real change.

Our actions are listed below:
We invited the schools of the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios to act together to form circular communities with the aim of transitioning to sustainable consumption and production patterns in order to achieve zero waste targets.
The students of the special education school visited the neighboring schools of formal education, placed posters and informed the students of all levels of education about their actions.
We organized experiential information and awareness actions with the object of reusing materials focusing on the ones that come from used household utensils and their final processing into useful objects such as lamps, frames, hangers, pots, etc. which were presented by students of the special education school and their partners through the digital webex platform. The activities included thematic sketches and karagiozis' performances, videos, songs and various environmental events in the context of socially oriented entrepreneurship.
The weekly presentations 22/11/21-26/11/21 were attended by schools from all education levels, education executives and representatives of the Local Government.
We have placed special collection bins in the partner schools for reusing household utensils and tools in order to encourage all target groups to be informed and to take part in reduction of the unnecessary consumption by focusing on "giving them a second chance".

We believe that small, local, fair, and inclusive circular communities can play a major role in pushing Europe towards
a sustainable future
